I have respect for him, he played his entire career with the Wings, and I love seeing people having that kind of devotion and not jumping ship when the team is losing (i.e. Alexei Yashin).
He also reminds me of the old time hockey players who have respect for each other, he doesnt badmouth other people and doesnt cheapshot other guys, so I got alot of respect for him

Back when I first started watching hockey a little over 20 years ago, Yzerman was indeed just another hockey player to me. I was (am and always) a Pittsburgh Penguins fan, so naturally, Mario Lemieux was my favorite player. Over time and from living just an hour away from Detroit, I gained a great deal of respect for Steve Yzerman. The man was full of heart. He basically played on one leg during the 2002 Olympics (as did Mario). He altered his offensive game for the sake of winning a trio of Stanley Cups for the Red Wings. He almost lost his eye (and still came back to enjoy a fitting finish to his career last season). To me, Steve Yzerman is among the ten greatest hockey players of all time, and rivals only Mark Messier as the greatest captain of any team sport.

Steve Yzerman has long been a favorite of mine. There are few players that I respect at the same level. There is no way that he went through what, with his knee, in the last few years for any reason other than love of the game. The guy is an outstanding example of hard work, discipline, leadership, honor, and class. Every player should aspire to have Yzerman's work ethic and integrity.

Stevie Y is both a skilled and dedicated athlete and a gentleman. I wish him luck in his new career. Looks like he did a fine job with Team Canada at the World Championships.
It's too bad he couldn't have played in his home town (Ottawa). I know most players would like to do that but then again I doubt the Red Wings would have ever won their last three cups without his leadership.

The classiest and one of the most under rated players of all times. He will continue to be good for hockey, especially Hockey Canada ... come 2010, he will be gathering our Olympic team up for the Gold medal win.

Stevie Y is and will always be one of my all time favorite players. I almost teared up when I watched his ceremony. There will never be another player like him.
A hardcore Sharks fan.

I have nothing but respect to Stevie Y and him stepping up to the thankless job of GM to TEAM Canada. He had more than his share of issues fired at him this year, and the team still won the Championship.

Coyotes fan here.
How can you not like the guy? Can't stand the emblem on the front but can root for that name on the back.
