Explanation 1: In Judaeo-Christianity, young children are proclaimed innocents as they have no knowledge of sin, regardless of their actions. This consequently has been taken to mean that the younger one dies, the more keen God is to have that person join him in heaven.

Explanation 2: The statement is used as a form of comfort and consolation to those who have lost a loved one at a young age.

Explanation 3: In popular culture there is a perpetual urban myth that men of true geniuses almost always die young eg Mozart, Nietzsche, Hendrix, Elvis, Van Gough. It follows that men of genius are those to whom God afforded the most gifts and therefore are most loved by God. (What of Freud, Einstein and all the other irrefutable geniuses that grew well into their 80s).

The truth: I don't believe in God but I think that if I did I would want him to judge me on my actions and intentions rather than on how soon after birth I met death. Explanation 2 is probably the most rational in any case.

Philosophically, or religiously based concept? I've seen absolutely no indication that age is a factor in death. Natural disasters, war, disease, so on. Both young & old die. If those whom God loves die young, why are they born to begin with? If God loves the young, wouldn't He (projecting human thought on God) give them the chance to enjoy & love life, & to "contribute?" I can--sort of--comprehend how someone who had lost a child would feel "comforted" to believe this. Except for the comfort, philosophically, WHY?

Sometimes, but the real truth is that some of the ones God loves are destined to die young. In real truth, its just about everybody who God loves and they could die young or old.

Not true... God loves everyone.... everyone doesn't love God. I find this very sad but.. they are the one's to suffer eternally not me.
Dieing is not the worst thing that could happen to a person either. At least that's what I believe.

i am not a truly religious person but i'll give this a shot.

in theory, god loves all man kind so regardless of if it's those who are still living or no longer with us. this is a question that is usually asked by some one who has lost someone close to them. if i am right, i am truly sorry for you loss. but to answer this question is to merely try to give some consolation to ease the pain of losing a loved one.

but at a time like that, what ever works for you is fine by me.

I think we are all born with a journey to take and a lesson to learn. It might take you five minutes or it might take you 100 years. I dont believe that if there is a God that he would be selective in that way. He would want our spirits/ souls to hunger for knowledge and enlightenment, to discover and learn what we needed to, I think you could learn everything in one brief lifetime or it might take you 100. But the rewards at the end would be immense.

I work with people who are terminally ill. Young or old or in between, I believe God loves them all. And 98% of them believe it too.

Probably not.

May just be what the people who outlive their loved ones say to help deal with the emotional distress.

I have seen what many constitute as good and strong of faith die when they are old and young so, my experience would lead me to believe No.
