As part of the Jordan legend, he supposedly "willed teams to victory" and took marginal players on his shoulders, and through his 4th quarter heroics, he would help these average players win championships. This is not legend, it is myth. Jordan did have a lot of 4th quarter heroics. That is indisputable. However, his teammates were very good and that is why the Bulls won titles. Wilt Chamberlain dominated far more than Jordan did, but Wilt proved that one man could not win a title. Only when he got teammates around him did he win titles. The same is true of Jordan, only more so, since Jordan wasn't as dominating as Chamberlain, he needed even MORE! help in order to win a title...read on as I will prove he was all Myth!

1994 and 1995 are key years during the Jordan years. These two years are central in proving that Jordan was not as valuable to his team as the his peers in the elite class of basketball players were to their teams. If he is not as valuable, how can he be the greatest

A Jordan fan cannot say that Jordan was a better individual player than Russell. After all, Russell AVERAGED over 22 rebounds per game. He is acknowledged by most to be the greatest defensive player in the history of the game, and to go along with that, he finished in the top 10 in the league in assists FOUR times (Jordan only did this once). He added 15 ppg to go along with this superior passing, rebounding, and defense.

2007-05-16 10:12:11 · update #1

The only recourse for a Jordan worshipper is to discount Russell's superior defense, rebounding, passing, and his overwhelming dominance in championships -- discount all of it -- and say "Jordan scored more points". However, as I showed above, points are irrelevant. Wilt Chamberlain dominated Jordan in points, and most other categories, but this was all discounted because of championships. You simply cannot say that Jordan's extra scoring somehow makes up for a 5 ring deficit after you just discounted Wilt's OVERWHELMING dominance of Jordan in scoring on account of a 4 ring deficit. And face it: it has to come down to points and rings because Jordan's passing and rebounding are simply unimpressive and his defense - while exceptional - is not on a plane higher than Chamberlain and Russell.

Therefore, there is no way that Michael Jordan can be the greatest player in history.

BUT, your using stats such as how many years someone did a single action.... However, Jordan was an extremely consistant grower in the league. The guy started out scoring, and had such a passion for the game to force himself into the top for defense and assists during his seasons as well, but he never gave up that scoring to go along with it.... Russel was good, but Jorda is widely known as the greatest ever...

Every generation one is chosen to represent the NBA, there is a reason LeBron who self monacre is "
The Chosen One" is sponsored by Nike as Jordan was.
This to some extent is "hype for money" as you so eloquently state. His teammates if you remember correctly were the typical NBA players when they first got together. Jordan helped every one of his teammates increase their skills nearly 50% making his surrounding cast stronger. Wilt and Bill were both very dominate players and critical to their teams success. That being said in my opinion neither one could guard SHAQ-daddy in the low post. Jordan couldn't have won any of those titles by himself, nobody can for that matter. That would be more fair to put up and compare Centers against each other. Jordan is suitable to be called the Greatest as well as Wilt or Bill different positions different times, for this is definitely opinion based on resume/career perfomance. The "biggest impact" player was Mikan nobody had seen a big man play the game until him he re-invented the game. The next big change to the game was the "big guard" who ran point and shooting MJ had a style of play that many of the stars today try to emulate and recreate. None of which can. For nearly 40 years the big man dominated the game, speed took over for about 20 and if you look at today it is a combination of both. Every team needs a big center and a big guard to win titles. Teamwork, defense, and determination wins championships now.
He was a shoe sellin mnf-er!

Yes, and no. As for kissmybutkus's post, Jay Mariotti is a jordonjocker that rivals Ahmad Rashad. The fact is jordon had the benefit of a brilliant marketing genius named David Stern, who doesn't get nearly enough credit for his role in growing the popularity of the NBA, not only in the USA, but worldwide.
What fails to be mentioned is that without Stern's vision, where the man was simply ahead of his time, similar to what
Vince McMahon did for the WWF (now WWE) in terms of expanding his territory from a regional or national market to an international one.
foolish jordon and his corporate backers owe David Stern
and the NBA a debt of gratitude for the additional millions of dollars of exposure, if not billions of dollars he created by marketing the NBA worldwide.
The Bulls may have won the title in 1994, because they still
had Grant, and were unlucky to lose to the Knicks in the second round. They would have been a good test for the Rockets. 1995 was an entirely different story altogether. They
didn't have Grant, and Rodman didn't arrive till the following season. The reason they regressed more in 1995 than in 1994, is because they had no good power forward. There's
no way the Bulls win the title in 1995 without Grant or Rodman, or a similar calibre power forward.
As Judden proved on his website, jordon is only worth 2
regular season wins per year, when they replaced him with CBA's Pete Myers. They went from 57 wins in 1992-93 to
55 wins the following season without him. They needed a
a good power forward for them to win, as well as Phil Jackson, Tex Winter's triangle or triple post offense, plus
Scottie Pippen.
If jordon is so great, how come he could never get out of the first round of the NBA playoffs without Phil Jackson,
Scottie Pippen and/or Horace Grant. Phil Jackson took
Shaq and Kobe to championship status. Shaq was basically
a complementary player to Dwayne Wade, when the Heat won the NBA title last season. Scottie Pippen and Horace
Grant were able to win NBA playoff series on teams without Michael.
Sure MJ made the winning shot in the 1982 NCAA basketball championship game, but he wasn't the star on that team, that included James Worthy and Sam Perkins, since he was a freshman at the time. I think that's where the hype
started, and Stern, the NBA, and Corporate America took it
to the next level.
In 1984, UNC, was a regional #1 seed in the East, but they lost to Indiana 72-68 in the Sweet 16, which was Michael's
last season at UNC. If you're wondering about 1983, the year
after their championship season, they lost in the regional finals to Georgia 82-77. UNC was the #2 seed in the East
bracket, while Georgia was the #4 seed in that bracket for that tournament year. Indiana was also a #4 seed in UNC's regional bracket in 1984.
Actually his legacy is having the rules altered so it could make things easier for him, like the handcheck rule, traveling and other things that he could get away with more easily. The
difference is when Wilt was playing, is the NBA designed rules to limit or reduce his dominance. They went the other way for jordon.

IMO, what happened is, the NBA is seeing the end of the Bird-Magic era. and because of the their love/passion for the game, they have raised the bar of excellence so high and so exciting that the NBA need someone to continue what Bird & Magic brought to the game of basketball. and that someone is Micheal Jordan. and because the Bulls are already winning by the time Magic & Bird left, the NBA or Stern for that matter, know that the great NBA show will continue. As for MJ, he benefited from the media/marketing hype. BUT, like his last shot in 1998, he delivered....and more! It so happen that he won his championships when Bird and Magic are in the end of their career. so for me, i would just say that Micheal Jordan is the greatest...........shooting guard ever!

Nice research and facts....

Jordan's legacy is a perception, and it doesn't matter who was more valuable to their teams. Ask the superstars of the league who influenced their game the most, and the answers are clear: it's Jordan. So go on with the facts, stats, etc., because it's not applicable here. The point here, is that Jordan is an inspiration to millions of ballers everywhere. That is what "legacy" is.

And I'll listen to players like Kobe and Lebron and how they mimic Jordan a lot more than I'll listen to you...whoever you are...

Wait....Bill Russell.....is this you? =)

Although I agree with you (I've always hated Jordan and always will) there is no point trying to convince the Jordan followers that he's not the "greatest". As much as the stats prove it, it's a pointless battle.

MJ is on your mind way toooooo much. Get a f u c k in life dude. Now bring on your little have *** comment, like you have to do with everyone, and defend yet another dumb as$ question.

If what you say is true, then you are a bigger loser than I thought. So you don't really mean what you say(write), your just trying to get attention. Now it all makes sense. What a bum. And I usually agree with the Kobe Haters because I can't stand prima donna's. But I would never say, or agree with the idiots who say Kobe sucks.
