bottom circle's area = pi * (radius squared)
bottom and top circle = bottom circle's area * 2

cylinder's surface area is just a folded rectangle = l * w
l = height of cylinder
w = circumference of circle = 2 * pi * radius
l * w = height * 2 * pi * radius

total surface area is sum of the above
(height * 2 * pi * radius) + (2 * pi * radius squared)

Roll out the cylinder so it's a flat rectangle. Solve for the area based on the W X L = Area for a rectangle. W = height of the cylinder and L = circumference of the cylinder. They are also the width and length of that rolled out cylinder, which looks like a rectangle.

If you want to include the ends of the cylinder in its surface area, they are just two circles with a = pi R^2 area each. R is the radius of each circle end. L = 2 pi R; so R = L/2pi. This follows because, as noted earlier, L = the circumference of the cylinder and each of those end circles. Remember to add the area of both ends into the rectangle area A found earlier. In all the surface area of the cylinder (with two ends) = A + 2a = W X L + 2 (pi L^2/4 pi^2) = W X L + L^2/2 pi

Let

h = height of the right cylinder
r = radius of the right cylinder

the formula is originated from the
area of the circle = (pi)r^2 and circumference of the circle = 2(pi)r.

In the cylinder, area of the upper and bottom circle = (pi)r^2 + (pi)r^2 = 2(pi)r^2

and height of the cylinder * circumference of the circle = h * 2(pi)r = 2(pi)rh

Surface area of right cylinder

= 2(pi)rh + 2(pi)r^2

I'm not 100 percent sure, but i don't believe a cylinder can be "right", if you mean having a ninety degree angle.
