I've recently heard that the second X-files movies is a go, but I can't seem to find any websites out there that confirm this. Does anyone have any idea whether this is just a rumor, or whether it's true?

The X-Files 2 is a projected film adaptation of the television series The X-Files, about FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully and their investigations into the paranormal. The working title refers to the fact that the movie is perceived as a sequel to the original 1998 film adaptation, The X-Files. The final title is unknown.

This production has yet to commence, due in part to a lawsuit between Chris Carter and 20th Century Fox, which has only recently been settled. Carter is assumed to desire creative control over the project, as with The X-Files series he created, and the previous film which he executive produced and co-wrote. It has been suggested that Carter has struggled to convince 20th Century Fox that David Duchovny (the original Mulder) was still a bankable star, after a string of failed projects since he left The X-Files, and the studio preferred another actor. However no official confirmation of that exists.

Carter's company, Ten Thirteen Productions, has been in hiatus since the end of the show, but is to be resurrected for the production of this project. Ten Thirteen produced the series and the previous film, which were both distributed by Fox. However, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have said they will sign on to the project to reprise their roles as Scully and Mulder, respectively, and Carter's longtime collaborator Frank Spotnitz has been hired to write a script. The 1998 film's director Rob Bowman has also talked about progress toward making a second film, though it is unclear whether he would direct it.

According to all the cast and crew members who have commented, the movie, should it be made according to Carter's wishes, will not focus on the mythology aspect of the series as the first film did. Instead, it will act as a stand-alone X-Files story in the vein of "monster-of-the-week" episodes. It is unknown whether such a film would pick up the continuity of the series mythology, including the new characters of John Doggett and Monica Reyes and the situation at the end of the ninth and final season. However, strict security and obfuscation is the usual practise of Ten Thirteen Productions, therefore few real conclusions can be drawn from early comments.

Carter, who once envisioned a series of X-Files films, has given few interviews since the show ended in 2002, and has not publicly discussed the project. 20th Century Fox have also been reticent on the subject. Anonymous sources claiming association with either Ten Thirteen Productions, Carter, or 20th Century Fox have posted comments online regarding the project, usually highly negative, but so far none have demonstrated any authority, and can safely be disregarded as false. In contrast, the actors and producers have publicly commented, and have been almost entirely upbeat. In spring of 2007, both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson discussed the film in several interviews, suggesting it was closer than ever to being made, though still not finalized.

David Duchovny had departed the show with some rancor in the early 2000s, but he discussed his hopes for an X-Files sequel in 2004. In early 2005 Duchovny said that he and Anderson were ready to return to their roles and that a movie was in the works and set to be filmed later that year—in December, the same month Carter filed his lawsuit with Fox. The film was apparently put on the backburner. However, in an interview with Parade in 2006, Duchovny confirmed that there will eventually be a sequel, stating that "we're all signed on." He also suggested it could be the start of an X-Files film series, comparing it to the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Rob Bowman also discussed the film, beginning in 2005, although Bowman departed from The X-Files series in 2000 after having directed both the 1998 film and a large number of episodes. Bowman relayed in 2006 that creator Chris Carter and Fox studios were currently settling legal matters over The X-Files and stated that production would begin when the matters were settled. In April 2007, Gillian Anderson indicated in an interview that Carter's lawsuit had been settled and production on the sequel was now set to move forward (see below). However, there was no official comment from Fox or Carter regarding the resolution of the lawsuit.

In an interview with IESB.net in March 2007, Duchovny said that final negotations for the sequel were being wrapped and filming would probably start in 2008. He described the film as a "supernatural thriller" and has said that "there is no script completed, they are still developing the entire story."

On April 2nd 2007, the website Empire published an interview with Gillian Anderson. When asked about an X-Files sequel, she said "Every year or two they talk about it again, but it seems like it might be for real this time. Somehow it seems like somebody’s really serious about it. I know that Chris' lawsuit with Fox is over, so maybe now it can be done." Regarding the plot for the new sequel, Anderson said "All Chris says is that he wants to make a really scary horror, like a stand-alone episode. I don’t think they’re interested in touching on any of the conspiracy stuff."

The next day, on April 3rd 2007, David Duchovny was mentioned[6] in a brief article on IMDb. In the article, Duchovny officially confirmed that he and Gillian Anderson would be returning in another X-Files movie, reprising their roles as Mulder and Scully. He said that X-Files creator Chris Carter was presently working on a script and that "This week, they're starting some kind of road towards doing [the film]. Gillian and I both want to be in it now. We're happy to do it. At this point all of the kind of fatigue and anxiety that we had towards the end of a nine-year run is gone. We've forgotten why we hate one another and can only remember why we love one another and we're very happy to go back. Chris and Frank are going over the story. It's a story they've had for a few years but we haven't all settled on the fact that we wanted to do it, so now they're hammering it out."

On April 11, 2007 David Duchovny made an appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly. Asked almost immediately about the projected X-Files film, Duchovny responded, "apparently, yeah, it's in the works." Met with cheers from the audience and temporary host Pat Sajak's demand for more details, he continued: "I dunno, it's all I've been cleared to say." However, he said the key participants were "all on board" and "moving forward" with the film. When co-host Kelly Ripa asked whether Duchovny (who had written several X-Files episodes) was involved in the writing or development in the script he joked, "Oh, I hope not."

On April 17, 2007 Frank Spotnitz made the following post on his personal blog: "IT'S TRUE. Several people have e-mailed to ask about reports that the second 'X-Files' feature is finally in the works. A script is indeed in development, but I'm afraid that's all I can say. Thanks for your good wishes and support all these years."

I'm crossing my fingers as well that a second movie will come out (with David and Gillian reprising their roles - I don't think I could watch it if they weren't able to do the movie, for one reason or another) - rumours are all over the 'net, however I wouldn't be lining up at the cinema until the script is done, the actors are signed and they start filming :D
