He should have the same amount of light and dark as any other animal. Also get him as big of a tank as you can. Bettas will not fight fish other then other bettas and actually I have a number of males together in a 175 tank that get along fine with the larg amount of space. Look up your little guy on a few different sites because they don't actually like to live in those little jars with no light and only a little food as most pet stores say.

I feed mine brine shrimp, let them live with sword tails (who they get along with and actually hurd their babies), and give them the same amount of light and care as one would give a larger animal. They can live up to and sometimes past 5 years and keep in mind ones at a store are normally less then a few months. Light and a gallon of awater are not the only things he needs.

Also Betta pellets are one of the worse foods for them, the only thing worse is flake food.

The tank should be heated as well and water changed half way once every week or two.

Water should also be treated before you put it in the tank on a water change, and there should be a little salt in the water. You also need a filter for any fish not just some bubbles.

Actually most fish only really need a couple hours of light a day, you could get by with only 4 or 5 hours of light and he'd be ok, as long as the temp of the water doesn't drop too low. Betta's are actually pretty low maintance fish so as long as you don't over feed him there isn't much you can do wrong.

I would suggest trying to provide as natural a habitat as possible, which would mean giving him a little lamp or some light during the day, and then turning it off again before bed. Or, if you are home with a light on for him for at least eight hours a day, that should be alright, giving him a good amount of "daylight" and a good amount of "nighttime." Normally, for my fish and hamsters, I keep a lamp on during the day so they can see and keep a good biorhythm going.

I have found that my bettas get sluggish if I leave them in the dark too long. Get a lamp of some kind and leave the light on for a couple hours a day, or, if you're at work a lot or something, you can put it on a timer. I think they will probably be okay, just a little less "spunky". Just make sure he doesn't get too cold, that can really get to them.

Get an overhead light for him to simulate day and night. Don't leave it on for much more than 8 hours at a time. Fish are living creatures, and almost all living things need light and darkness...

yeah its bad for him a lot of fish need light depending on how much they get in the wild. they could be like a piranha don't need much or they can be like a reef fish need a lot of light i recommend you give him about 8-10 hours a day. and if you can try not to put him in 1 of those small tanks like the size of a cup its like you living in a closet. Its sad and depressing.

good luck!! with him

As long as it's not as dark as night in your room while your gone he'll be fine. If it's nearly as dark as outside at night, then get him a small light or leave a lamp on in the room.

It's good for them to have a sense of night and day.

You could put him in a lit room, until you get home, then move him.

Most living things need light to be healthy. As long as he's getting some when you get home he should be fine.
