Referring to him as "Atticus" rather than "Dad" Lent additional impartiality to the character that would not be available had he been referred to by the narrator as "Dad".
I.e.: even within his own family, he was labeled impartially...
Also, although having many loving paternal aspects, Atticus was first and foremost an institution more than a man.

He treats them as reasonable human beings, getting them to think and behave in ways that are socially responsible. Although he is their father, the lack of "daddy" shows his respect for his children as human beings. Also they are quite precocious, especially Scout; they are almost intellectual equals.

that was the last book i ever read, and that was like 5 years ago but great book. We had to do an essay but good point i dont think my teacher picked up on that.
