All the above answers are correct. It's to be used for warming up the next inning. It's also considered a good luck tradition. Baseball players in general are a little superstitious. This tradition was started long ago. It's considered bad luck not to toss a ball to the first baseman as he leaves the field.

Fielders warm up by playing catch before the opposing team is ready to bat. A ball gets tossed to the first baseman so he'll have one handy at the beginning of the next inning.
