i have noticed teams in the majors do this for years as i watched games. I am curious as to why though. it is allways the firstbaseman though as he is coming into dugout after inning.

So when they go back out to the field he has a ball to warm up the rest of the infielders with. Watch between innings, the firstbaseman will toss grounders to the rest of the infielders while the pitcher warms up.

All the above answers are correct. It's to be used for warming up the next inning. It's also considered a good luck tradition. Baseball players in general are a little superstitious. This tradition was started long ago. It's considered bad luck not to toss a ball to the first baseman as he leaves the field.

Fielders warm up by playing catch before the opposing team is ready to bat. A ball gets tossed to the first baseman so he'll have one handy at the beginning of the next inning.

They use the ball to pass between the infielders mid inning to stay warm while the pitcher warms up.

To warm up the 2B, SS, 3B between innings. They toss one the center fielder too.
