The only thing I can really add to Rohak's answer is that you also have to keep in mind the bad history between the elves and the dwarves... In a situation with bad blood like that, everyone is likely to leap to the wrong conclusions, so they probably didn't want to risk making their situation worse.

Partly due to the long-standing dislike between elf and dwarf, and partly through greed; if they told the Elf King might have not allowed them to go without promising a share of the wealth and sending along a detachment of elves to collect their cut.
