Hermione studies harder than anyone else, and is the top student in her year at Hogwarts. She abhors the way house elves are treated, and tries to do something about it. She's got curly, unruly hair. She also doesn't seem to care about going home for Christmas. So, is she Jewish?

Other than the christmas thing, I'm not sure why any of your other point would indicate she's Jewish.

Any way, she did go home for Christmas a couple of times. And let's face it, she's a main character, if she's needed for the story, she'll find some reason to be at Hogwarts. As to her being top of the class, etc. That's simply to make a point that "mudbloods" are just as good as pure bloods.

Sure.

Why not?

JK Rowling doesn't deal directly with religion in the books, and the reader of a book is always allowed to interpret it as she wills. So if you like imagining that Hermione is Jewish, go for it.

Although, she does pass out Christmas gifts, so maybe she is one of those people who has parents of 2 different religions and celebrates both Holidays...

I say "whatever" to all the other answers on here. I think she surely is Jewish, it seems pretty obvious. A lot of the things in the book are paralell to our world, and a lot of things seem to be different, so I think she is at least the equivalent of Jewish. Rowling doesn't ever mention a persons ethnicity or religion, just their habits and features give us clues. So if you can tell who is black or Asian by their hair or eyes, why shouldn't H. be Jewish?

In chapter 12 of HP and the Sorcerer's Stone Hagrid is bringing in a tree to decorate Hogwarts. He tells Ron and Harry to cheer up because it is almost Christmas. A few sentences later he asks "How many days you got left until yer holidays?" Hermione answers back, "Just one". Unless Hermione is celebrating "Festivus" this reference can only be to Chanukah.

Well, she passes out Christmas gifts, not Chanukah gifts, and says "Happy Christmas" to Harry and Ron. So I'm thinking, no, she's not Jewish. And if you think about it, it wasn't that she didn't want to celebrate Christmas, it was just that she really needed to be with her friends.

I don't think that you can say that based on what you've suggested. Plenty of gentiles fit your description, even to the missing of Christmas (which she does to stay with Harry and Ron).

Religion is something that JKR keeps well away from.

Ummm... she's a fictional character. You're asking if a character in a book, based upon the decisions the author makes concerning the fictional character's study habits, is of a particular religion? Ummm... she's fictional.

Why not call her Buddhist? Or Agnostic?

You are aware of what "fiction is", aren't you?
