My wife and I went to Waikiki for our honeymoon and stayed in a condo right next to the military hotel on the beach. Lots of fun stuff to do within walking distance, only a short drive or bus trip to the Arizona, and right on the beach.
We went on the third of October, and it was in the 90's during the day and about 70 at night.
We went parasailing, took a submarine tour, went to the Dole plantation, the Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri... rode the big floating tricycles in the ocean, drove around the island in our convertible rental. Booked the trip through Expedia. One week, condo and car for the whole time, and roundtrip flights for under $3000.
Have a great time!

I spent 1 week on the Big Island of Hawaii 2 years ago. There were so much to do. The beach was a short drive away. There's all sorts of activities like touring the entire island, going to the National Volcano Park, horseback riding, helicopter/plane ride over the volcanoes, canoeing, scuba diving, whale watching (in Dec.), etc. Your husband would love the variety of trips he can plan with at a tourist agnecy which are anywhere near the local shopping areas.
I've heard that every island is unique so you won't be disappointed. Oahu has more of a night life near Honolulu. IF you want a real HAWAIIAN experience I would recommend the BIG ISLAND or Kauai. I heard Maui is amazing. If you plan your trips in advance or if you are spending more than a week there - you can ISLAND HOP on one of Hawaii's airlines (Aloha Airlines) for about $100 roundtrip.
Whatever you do, relax and enjoy what Hawaii has to offer. It is one of the MOST AMAZING places on Earth. The people are so nice that you just want to forget you have a plane to catch.
I don't think there is a BAD time to go to Hawaii. It should be pleasant in October. I went a week before Christmas and every day was sunny and in the mid 80s. PERFECT Paradise!!!!

If you want to see the Arizona, you should really go to two islands. It sounds like you would both be better off on Maui, not Oahu. However you can stay on Oahu for just a couple of days to see what you want. October is better than September as the humidity starts to drop. Try late October or even November if you can.
There is a very nice Marriott on Maui, and it's on the best part of the island. You can't go wrong with Maui.

The Marriott in Lihue, Kau'ai is the best hotel I've ever stayed at. Their pool is the largest of all the islands, with hot tubs and waterfalls ringing the sides of the pool. The grounds are beautiful. The snorkeling at Poi Pu and elsewhere is awesome, the Na Pali Coast trail and Waimea Canyon are not to be missed. Jerry operates an ultralight service there and will take you for a one-hour flight along the coast for a very exciting flight. We had a lot of fun in Kau'ai.
Sept/Oct is a great time to go.

Oahu has everything...are u two daring...u two can try parasailing, or swimming with the dolpins....if you two want something romantic on the beach...u two should horseback ride!! whenever u two can...go out, go to luauz!! the polynesian cultural center. Wanna go to another island...MAUI is beautiful!! Oahu was always more city life to me, but maui u will see the beauty of exotic living!! u guys got nothing to lose actually....everywhere u go....its fantastic. Lots of people go the swapmeet to buy stuff there, its cheaper and reasonable. and it has everything in 1 spot. Dont go to the pools there, y go to a pool when u got the beach all around u. Have fun, and enjoy cuz its just you two!! oh, and have money!! lots of it!! ENJOY!!

That is a perfect time of year the rainy season is Jan / Feb in Hawaii. I say there is many things to do there on the other islands away and island hopping is pretty common and not a major cost when considering Hawaii in general is a pretty pricy vaca for the average person. I say hop on over to Kauai and go to fern grotto and enjoy that island for that is the garden island and the least one developed hence the beauty is remarkable. ^_^
