My laptop recongnizes that a mass storage device has been installed but when I try to open it I get a message asking me if I want to format the drive. I don't wanna do that as I will lose all my itunes library (which I have in a Mac)

Macs and Windows use different formatting. You may only be able to plug the device into one OS, ie Mac or Windows.

It will work with Windows, but you will need to change the formatting (ie format the drive) to be recognized by Windows.

Yeah, but it doesn't end there, because if you want to still keep your songs on the ipod, then you'll probably have to move the mp3s/songs to the Windows computer and import them into iTunes before you'll be able to synchronize them to the ipod again, that could be a bit of a hassle, unless the Mac and the Windows ME machine are on the same network.
