and I really do not fancy that at all as i would like my labour / birth to be as natural as possible. Is it really nessacary to do a sweep when i'll only be one day away from 40 weeks? what are the consequences of having one? Can it slow labour/create problems/ make it more likely to require pain relief like being induced can? I was hoping for a natural waterbirth and know that being induced can cause other problems in the labour, was wondering if a membrane sweep does too. this is my first

hi
i had a sweep a day after my 40th week....... i then got home and started doing gentle stair exercises just climbing the stairs as the mid-wife told me this would bring on my labour. the following day at 7am i had contractions, and by 2pm they were coming every 5 mins, i arrived at the birthing ctr and got straight into a birthing pool, by 5.28pm i delivered my baby boy! the sweep just helps bring on the labour, this will not effect your plans for a water birth!!! you will have a supply of gas and air (boy that stuff was good) and being in the pool is a pain relief as well!!!! i advise anyone to have a water birth, and i know on my 2nd pregnancy (when i am ready for another baby) i will do the same.
good luck hun x

Hun stop worrying yourself! A membrane sweep is nothing to be scared off or to get stressed over. All it does is makes your cievix ripen it will not cause any problems at all. The doctor will swipe your cervix you might bleed afterwards and you might not. This does not mean you will go into labour it does take between 24 - 48 hours and even then it might not work. You could end up having a natural birth in the first place.

You can refuse the sweep, you don't have to have it. I had one and it was very uncomfortable, not painful but still v uncomfortable. It didn't do a damn thing anyhow. I ended up being induced and my labour went fine. It wont cause any problems with labour so don't worry. Just make sure you tell your midwife if you dont want the sweep. Good luck

membrane sweeping is a natural way to induce labor, it can cause intense contractions in some women. Just ask them to go easy on you.

Induction doen not generally cause a need for pain relief. The problem is with induction you don't get the graadual build up to labor that releases hormones that help you deal with the pain. Its like a shotgun labor, unexpected. Membrane sweep will allow you to start labor on your own, and have the gradual build up to active labor. good luck, and I hope you get that baby out soon!!

One more thing, haveing meds in labor is sometimes necessary, and does not mean you have failed. Case in point, my sister had a natural birth planned, had a doula with her, and had a bath to sit in. Then she had back labor, and the pain was so intense she panicked, which caused her to tense up and her dialation stalled at 7 for 3 hrs. She finally decided to get an epidural, an as soon as her pain was relieved she went to 10 in 30 min, and delivered in 3 pushes.

I just had a membrane sweep on monday. I didnt start having any results from it until today. I was expecting it to be painful, but I hardly felt anything when he did it. I am due tomorrow (May 17th) and because of gestational diabetes will have to be induced the 21st if she isnt here yet. I also was hoping to go naturally. The doctor really wanted me to naturally also which is why he did the sweep. The doctor never told me that there were any negative side affects. He just told me that its supossed to help open the cervix and get me dilated faster. Good Luck and Congrats!

If you really don't want to have it done then tell your midwife . Its your body and your pregnancy. That said if you get to over 41 weeks I would ask for it to be done before they talk of inducing you as its a natural way to bring on the labour, I don't think it will cause you any problems. I found that it didn`t hurt just felt a little uncomfortable.
good luck with your new baby

A membrane sweep is not as bad as being chemically induced, so it's probably fine. It's more of a jump-start than anything. If you don't want to do it though, don't (it's not exactly comfortable). Unless there is a medical reason to get you going ahead of time, there is nothing wrong with going up to 42 weeks. Just tell your practitioner your wishes; they'll hopefully respect and understand them.

hiya i dont think a sweep does anything but soften your womb lining. try to encourage labour to start. i would of thought it would effect labour and i dont think it would stop you having a water birth. talk to your midwife about it she will be able to tell you allthe facts you want and need to know. i got told they were going to sweep me when i was pregnant but 2days before i went into labour! so hopefully you will beat the midwife! good luck and i hope you have the birth you wish for! xx

Don't worry, you can still have the birth you want. A sweet requires no chemicals.. it's just the Dr. will sweep your cervix and possibly try to stretch it with his fingers... It's not very painful, and can possibly start labor if your body is ready.

My membrane sweep just thinned the membrane and made it possible for me to go into labor naturally 3 days later!
