Tough one. I guess it depends on how well I know them and what I could do to help.

It really depends on how much time I have, and the connection I have with them. If the subject hits the heart then I would go further, but honestly I usually don't go far to help out strangers on the Internet.

I have actually gone to great lengths. A friend I met on the internet and occasionally met for lunch in real life needed some cash and I coughed it up in a heartbeat.
Why? Because I could.. lol
Now, I may need to ask for some of that back..

Well, what length I won't go to is to give them my account numbers so they can smuggle their millions out of whatever third world country they are asking from. So far those are the only strangers who have asked for anything.

I'm always open to help out people who are genuinely in need but I think 'to what' extent would actually depend on their needs & my means but in real life sometimes I've gone beyond that as well so I would say it all comes down to what their need is and what kind of help they seek...

I have met a few I have helped face to face. They came to me. Also several more by phone or through email.
