Not really as modem speeds these days are about 56K and most modem will do that easily. To go faster you need broadband or ISDN line. ISDN would use a Terminal Adapter on your USB port and can run at 64K or 128K and broadband will go much faster out of you network port or your USM port depending on the device they fit at the end of the line.
Hope this helps.

Usually not. If your are running a 56K modem,56,000 bits a second, then that's as fast as the modem can accept data. Internet speed is determined by the amount of data that is being presented to the modem, and not the hardware that you have installed. With dialup, the more phone line there is between you and the last switch on your phone company's line the less the speed. Also, make sure that the wires leading to your home are in good shape and that there is no corrosion where they join to the phone company's wires. This is usually done in a little box on the side of your house.

It makes no difference how good your modem is it won't make your downloads any faster. If you have a 56k modem then it is going to be slow as this is the lowest speed for a modem. Many people have now changed to broadband, this is much much faster. you can have up to 8Mg that is about 16 times faster than what a 56k modem is. A router will give you a much better connection than a standard modem and are much easy er to setup.

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.
A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimage™ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

Since you didn't specify dial-up or cable modem, I'll explain both.
Dial-up-->If the modem is rated V.92, then that's about as fast as you can get. Anything lower isn't that reliable.
Cable/DSL-->Unless the brand is highly unknown, cable modem have more than enough power to provide then necessary speed (around 30MBps; most cable ISPs don't go beyond 8MBps). Dropouts in your internet connection are caused by the ISP, not the modem. The one that you get with the ISP is acceptable.

all depends on whether your using dial up or broadband service via, dsl, cable, or wireless, just have to know what the kbps speed is and whether or not it's connected to your computer via teh data fax modem or the Lan connection or Ethernet connection. Broadband is the recommendation for todays internet Dial up is to slow and being fazed out. Broadband is in MGHZ where as dial up is in KBPS or Killo bytes.

You can buy a modem rather than rental. I don't see any big
difference it makes buying costly modem to cheaper one.

It won't make your internet faster, but it is better to just buy your own.
You are already paying $60 a year just to rent it, and they barely even cost $60.
