One of the best short stories that i have ever written started off with a landscape picture. I came across a picture that was taken of a trail in the woods (why, i don't know) and I sat and stared at this picture wondering all the reasons behind why someone would take this picture and what it had meant to them. I imagined where the path led and who might actually walk it. Before I knew it, I had created a whole story and it all started with a simple picture. So my best advice to you is to fixate on an object or a picture (like I did) or a person that you see on the street and imagine the story that goes with it/ them. I particularly like short stories that show hindsight.... like cleaning out an attic and coming across a certain trinket and either finding a story about it or imagining one. Or even a lost journal...... Good luck and don't stress about it.. this should be a fun project, just let your imagination do the work for you.

Wow. I have a million ideas. But why don't you find it within yourself by trying one of these two exercises (that I made up).

1) Take a notebook and pen and just start writing without censoring anything. Do this for 20 minutes. Then, take a highlighter and read what you wrote. Highlight any sentence or group of words you find interesting. After you're done. Go back. Take a highlighter with a different color, and go through it again. Highlight the most interesting passage of those you already highlighted. Put the words on the top of a page and start writing.

2) Take a sheet of paper: Write 20 questions in a row, each beginning with the words "What if"? When done, look over your questions. Pick one you find interesting and write a story about it.

How about a girl on a quest looking and searching for an idea to find out what it takes to become an author.

How about rewriting a fairy tale and putting it in the modern world? Cinderella could be a goth, or Tinkerbell could be a punk fairy, and the girls wouldn't be all that interested in marrying Prince Charming and he'd have to chase after them.

ok, call it a teacherss "tale". and write about a teacher with a "TAIL."

or write about a man who kills someone, puts their head in a plastic bag and sets it on the stairs of the state house with an american flag through it!
