i've always heard that it's a fonetic/parlance pronunciation of 'in the garden of eden.'

The lyrics mean "In A Garden Of Venus" apparently. Personally i just think they were tripping off their heads on acid some people say its the only way to understand the song (to listen to it on LSD).
It's just 3 guys rocking out and taking a terribly long time to finish a solo.
The original song went for just over 20 minutes.

In the garden of Eden, but I've always heard that the singer was so doped up when he recorded it that "ina gadda da vida" is what came out when he tried to pronounce it.

the title was supose to be "In the Garden of Eden" but the singer's voice changed the way he said it.
