had no controversy surrounding him regarding cheating/steroids, and he wasn't such a jerk to the media, what would people think of this guy about to break the record? I feel that no matter WHO would be trying to break the record, people would find some reason to dislike that person. Aaron's record is sacred. What would people say about Barry if he wasn't a jerk and a cheater?

I believe that baseball fans would love to have a real life hero break the record. I don't think it would matter at all who it was as long as he was a good guy and did it the right way. If Bonds had chosen to do it the right way and was a good guy I think all of baseball would be behind him.

Those who say it's a race issue are just using that as an excuse. It's all about integrity but unfortunately Bonds has none.

Barry is not a jerk or a cheater. I've met him, chatted with him and he acts like a normal person. It's the media and ignorant fans who never met him that think he's a bad person. Just a bunch of followers brainwashed by some fart and cigar smelling jerk of a reporter that was denied an interview by Barry.

You're right that anyone else would catch some sort of heat, but with Barry it's different. Look at the steroid controversy for instance. No positive test results from MLB or their independent labs for steroids..... If that does not prove he did not take steroids, why are people still insisting? Medical proof is that anabolic steroids will not give you a faster bat speed or sharper eyesight. Steroids will do just the opposite, and will wreck your attitude as well. You need focus, a clear mind, sharp eyesight and quick batspeed to hit that many HR's.

All professional sports records are never considered "sacred". They are all meant to be surpassed.

Most of the same things were said when Aaron broke Ruth's record. People were even threaten to kill him!! It is part racist and part anger, from people not wanting to see other people get ahead. What makes you think Bonds is a jerk, have you ever meet the guy? Just because he doesn't talk to the media, that doesn't make him a jerk, that would make him even a greater guy in my book!! There is NO proof Bonds took steroids, and even if he did, they were not ban at the time, so in no way did he cheat!! It don't stand up in court, so everyone needs to just let it go!! And be happy to see history being made!!!

Unfortunately, Bonds is best know through the media, and he has ingratiated himself through them. Most fans only know what they see, read, and hear on TV and publications, and the media exposes as many negatives about players as possible. Only watch Bonds talents on the field, and you can't help but cheer.
McGuire was heroic in his quest past 61. Pete Rose the player was exhaulted. Barry's 500-500 achievement of HR/Stolen Bases was enough to ensure him a rightful place among the game's all-time best, but only time will tell now. Ted Williams hated the media, but outlasted the animosity and was honored the last years of his life. Jason Giambi 'fessed up, and is out of the limelight. Good luck Barry, do the right thing! Thanks for the on-field highlights!!

I disagree with you. Aaron's record is not sacred. If the person close to breaking it were honest and not such a jerk, then I am sure people, including Hank Aaron, would be rooting for him. However, that is not the case, and the result is dissension and anger against Bonds.

Chow!!

I think most people would be all over it as they were about to witness a piece of history that some of us weren't around for when Aaron did it.

We loved Kirby Puckett, Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor, Greg Maddux and Cal Ripken, all those guys who seemed to play the game right.

Being a jerk didn't kill Bonds, it's the steroids. I think some would have cast him aside, but overall, they would be rooting for him.

As for Bonds not 'owing the media anything', that may be true directly, but the media represents the path of information from the game to the fans and he DOES owe the fans something. If he wanted to not owe the fans, then he should have played for the league minimum throughout his career.

Directly/Indirectly, you made an extremely rich man out of someone who, without baseball, could very well be dead right now if he relied on his mouth or at Sears selling mattresses if he could keep a job.

If Barry was a good person then he wouldn't get the amount of crap he is getting now. There will always be people who hate someone for no particular reason, but Barry is a disgraceful person and player. If he wasn't I'd be happy for him and would probably follow the road to the record a lot more closely.

Records are made to be broken. That they are not sacred is what is so appealing. Watch 61*, the movie about Roger Maris' ordeal in New York, if you want to see how not to react to the setting of a new HR record. Man the whole point of achievement gets lost in sentimentality, and sports in general suffer, when we forget it's real purpose, which is to TRY, not necessarily to win.

Untrue. If a good person were the one getting ready to win the award, then I would root for them. Everyone would like to see a big record broken in their lifetime. I would root for the GOOD person as long as they didn't cheat, or play for the Yankees.

As a lifelong, blue-blooded Dodgers fan, I would root against that cheating jerk even in the scenario where wasn't a cheating jerk.
