In a nutshell, because of Wal-Mart and other giant companies that want to maximize their bottom line and do so buy purchasing from China and other countries. When we experience a negative balance of trade, our currency becomes weaker. This is compounded by the Government (Federal, State and Local) spending more than their revenues, causing inflation. The old Kensian Economics demands inflation, just like Governments demand higher populations, even though both are a detriment to economic stability.
So, don't buy foreign products and don't let your Government raise your taxes.

Because Americans mainly rely on credit. Countries that uses the Euro, actually spend and save actual cash, and reserve credit for bigger purchases. Also, I think Americans buy more products made by China and countries like it, that tend to be poorer quality and cheap. While in Europe quality is what is most important, so we buy less from countries like China, and are willing to buy fewer things and more for the quality.
I own one pair of flip flops, 1 pair of kleppers, 2 pairs of sandals, 4 pairs of athletic shoes, 2 clogs, 2 pairs of dress shoes, 1 pair of hiking boots, 1 pair of motorcycle boots. That's 9 pairs of shoes (not counting my athletic shoes, because they are paid for by sponsors). But, I have only bought 1 new pair (Crocs) in 3 years. My shoes are such good quality that I don't need to replace them every 6 months.
I got all my shoes from Euro countries with the exception of Crocs. None came from China. So I don't have to replace them all the time.
My dads and moms clogs are from Denmark and they had them for 20 years.
Now that I am living in the US while completing my Graduate studies, I found that I like American Quaker furniture because it's quality made. But I go to my friends houses and they have cheap furniture made in another country. Will end up replacing them in 4 to 5 years. My parents have furniture that are well built and up to date looking, some of the furniture are 50 years old. I know my Quaker table & chairs, bed, and armoire, will be with me 50 years from now.
If American spend differently and pay their credit cards off each month. The dollar will be strong too.

because the euro has more trading value - you can buy more with it. it is the basic currency for much of europe - much more diverse product range, intrinsic value.
us, can, & mexico should follow suit and develop a north american currency in order to compete. eventually the entire world will have one global currency, probably not in our lifetime though.

i think there are two big reasons: one, there is a large economy (germany) behind the euro. two, since 9/11, american government as well as the american economy has been, well, not so well liked :(

Who do you think is responsible for that? If you're to busy fighting, you're not building, advancing and developing. Others are competing.
