It probably means the lightening was within about 1000 ft from where you were standing.
If it sounded like one loud bang then it was probably withing 328 feet of you.

If thunder sounds as soon as the lightning strikes, that means the lightning is really close. The rule I hear is for every second between the strike and the noise, it is about a mile.

It means "duck for cover"! Lightning usually strikes the tallest object near the storm, but no one and nothing is safe. If the hair on your head or the hair on your arm starts to stand straight up, drop into a ball and pray that it will pass soon!

you are pretty close of the lightning impact point. Delay between thunder and lighting is caused by the difference between the speed of light and the speed of sound.
