The answer is yes, but you're just as well using the paper. There is a liquid that you can buy from most good craft shops that you can apply to an image, that attach to a T-shirt. Using glossy images the transfer can be quite good, however I am not sure how well it would work with matte images.
The problem is, of course, that it works out a little more expensive than buying the printer transfer paper. I've been playing around with such things for a long time and that is the only transfer method I know without using the printer-transfer sheets.
**edit**
Just for the record, the stuff I was talking about is called "Image Maker" and is marketed by Dylon. You can check it out on their website here:

Do u mean the material or painting? To make a shirt, find a pattern, get lessons, or look at another shirt u have (that isn't stretchy) and look how they made it. To paint words on a shirt, draw a faint outline with a pencil and paint within while the shirt is pulled over a reasonable-sized box from ur local grocery store (tight enough so it doesn't wrinkle but not 2 tight). Or u can get stickers and outline around them then follow process for painting.

I don't know what a4 paper is, but you can buy iron on tranfer sheets that are printable. I have a regular inkjet and I printed off pictures on the paper and it worked great!!! You can upload images that you have and print it out. You can get these sheets at michaels and the website is www.wilton.com. The iron on transfer sheets are by wilton.

No, but you can buy a pack of special paper at any office supply store or WalMart for about $10.00. It works just as well as the professional stuff for a few shirts, not a bad deal at all!!!
