TV tuner cards only display the TV signal coming in onto your computer.

So yes, you need cable, and it will only display the channels that normally come in through cable.

The 1500 chaennels of TV you see all over the Internet are a bunch of BS. Most are incredibly lame public access or university channels that only have programming on a few hours a day. Not worht it.

Usually a TV tuner will only receive the analog channels that come through the cable if you just plug the cable from the wall to the tuner. If you already have cable in the house/apartment then this is how it would work. I think that a lot of channels below channel 100 or so are analog, but not all. You can change channels no problem regardless of what the cable box is on. You can also put a regular old-style TV antenna on the tuner card in place of the cable connection and get all the over-the-air free channels.

You might be able to use the cable box coax output to go to the TV tuner. The problem with that is you have to change channels on the cable box to watch a different channel.

You just need a vacant PCI slot. Be sure to clean that vacant slot first before you plug in anything. Years of unuse may have deposited dust on the lower contacting pins.

i do no longer think of there are any video card standards. verify the producer's cyber web web site to verify if there are. as long as your laptop replaced into made in the previous couple of years, it may be waiting to handle exhibiting the video.
