Earned Runs given up x 9 Divided by Innings Pitched.
So...
20 ER x 9 = 180 / 90 IP = 2.00
1 ER x 9 = 9 / 2 IP = 4.50
Easy!

You divide innings pitched by 9 .
You then divide the ER by the first figure.
25/9= 2.777777...8
In those 25 IP he gave up 8 ER you divide 8/2.77778= An ERA of 2.8799=2.88

The number of "earned runs" given up divided by the number of "innings pitched" multiplied by 9.
Example:
5 earned runs in 6 innings.
5/6= .8333333
.833333 x 9 = 7.50 ERA

ok first get your calculator........you take earned runs (ER in the boxscore) multiply it by 9 and then divide by innings pitched (IP in the boxscore). that number will be the era.
