YES! I can build a better gaming machine than dell's best xps system, spending only $800 compare to dell's $1900+ plus you don't get all the crap software. try looking at tigerdirect.com and look at bare bone systems. good luck

Really depends on how far you want to go.
If your looking at some basic stuff....
Case: $50 or less
CPU+Motherboard combo: $100
512 RAM: $50~80
CD rom: $20
100GB Harddrive $50~60
If your looking for top of the line
Cool looking Case: $100~150
CPU: $200~250
Motherboard: $200~250
1GB: $100~200 depending on speed
(so X2 if your getting 2GB)
blue ray: $250~400 (not sure about retail price)
500 GB Harddrive: $100~300
Graphic card: i believe a decent PCI-E card will go around $200~350 depending on how much bad @$$$ graphic you want.
So.. you do the math...
Building a computer isn't that hard... just have to where to plug in everything and how you control the air flow inside your computer to make it a positive or a negative for your desired temperature.

A $1000 for a decent comp if you have to buy all the hardware and software.
$300 for an ok processor and motherboard combo
$150 to $200 for slower one,
DDR ram is cheap $100 to $150 will get you at least a gig of ram,
A newer video card will set u back $200 or more.
A SATA hard drive about $100 to $150.
Use your old case just buy a new power supply. $50
Also if you don't own a full version of an operating system you will have to buy it,. Buy the OEM version when you buy your hardware, it's much cheaper.
Make sure all your hardware is compatible,
for instance I had to buy a new power supply to use the SATA hard drive.
Shop around for parts before you buy them.
And decide what you want the computer for, a gaming computer will cost more than a family one.

According to the article listed in the source, it costs about $1200-3700. But it's all depends where you buy the parts.

pc magazine ran an article on this. As I recall it is about the same price as buying a new one. The difference was that the components are higher end.

You're probably looking at $400-800. Some good websites to look at are Newegg.com or PCclub.com.
