I've noticed on the road that vehicles have fuzzy shadows on the sides perpendicular to the observing direction and completely unrelated to the angle of the vehicle relative to the sun, which is obscured anyway.

The shadow is on both sides of the vehicle or object, NOT opposite the light source (sun) - which is mostly ambient anyways because it is overcast. I've wondered if it has to do with polarization of the light.

B'coz light is coming from that side where the observer is seeing.
