Like dogs or cats would, i've had my two baby red eared sliders for about 2 months now. Im not sure if they recognize me but they seem to be more comfortable when I take them out of their tank.

Yes they do! Mine swim frantically at the tank glass when I walk in! FOOD! they watch me go to the freezer and walk back where I put the frozen salmon on a cutting board in front of them and chop it. They go bonkers! Even if their basking or sleeping when they hear that chopping noise they come zooming to see whats up!

Growing in Arizona up we had a Desert Sand Tortoise. My mom brought it to my sisters classroom for show and tell. The kids sat in a big circle and put the turtle in the middle of the circle of kids. Every time the turtle crawled right to my sister.

We just kept the tortoise in the back yard and just let it eat grass and what ever else it could find it did not equate any of us with food. It loved to try to get into the house through the patio door as well. When it wasn't hibernating it was almost like having a dog.

I have 2 red earred sliders.

They know to come to the edge of their pool for food. As far as recognizing me? Not sure. I think they see a body and know they will be fed.

They equate you with food (that's pretty much how it goes with turtles) If they are more comfortable when you take them out of their tank you might be lack in your set up.

They may not actually "recognize" you, but like most creatures they will become accustomed to you if you spend a fair amount of time handling and feeding them.

Turtles quickly come to identify certain things with food, like the giant moving blob that drops it in their tank.

They also come to understand that the giant moving blob won't hurt them if it picks them up- but this does not mean they like being picked up by giants!

Their brain is about the size of a pin head, but if they wink at you, you may be in for a surprise

My RES seems to know that I not my husband is the one who feeds him. Also he doesn't shut up in his shell when I pick him up anymore. I take these as recognition.
