Can irises be planted in planters on a balcony and how long does it take for them to grow? I am new at this and was told they are easy to care for.

As long as they get water they will do fine. Mine actually seem to prefer rocks so add some of that white stone gravel to the bottom of the container first....This will help with draining too. I'm not sure how long it takes but if you buy them without any green on them, it may take a whole year. If you buy them already started with the green coming up then they or may not bloom this year but have no fear, they will grow and bloom next year. Good luck

Suggest using at least a 5 gallon pot. Usually available at nurseries for little money -- the black plastic ones . Irises want full sun. Heavy feeders, MiracleGro is great.

Irisies do not do well in planters. No one I know has had success with an iris in a potted environment. The iris likes to stretch its root and meander. It does not take kindly to containment. The iris has a surface root (rhizome) that does not like to be buried and wants freedom to spread. The leaves may grown but the chances or flowering are slim. Impatiens, petunias, marigolds, nasturtiums, sweet potato vine all do well in containers. Iris does not.
