I have 6 goldfish in a large tank, they all appear to be healthy but the second smallest one appears to be getting a problem. It had a large fan-shaped tail but recently it has started to become very ragged.

Are the other fish eating it's tail? Bullying it perhaps? Any ideas?

All the fish appear to be healthy, apart from this one fish and his sorry-looking tail!

It's possible the other fish are damaging the tail, you would have to sit back and watch them for a while to see if that's the case.

It's also possible the fish has fin rot. If the edges of the fin look white and almost rotten, that is the more likely case. Fin rot can be treated with any one of several antibiotics like Maracyn, Maracyn TC, Furan-2 or Furanace. Just treat as directed on the package.

if the tail is just ragged and there is no spots or fuzzy stuff on it then it is being attacked by the other goldfish. See if you can't pull the fish out and get a good close look and if it is fuzzy or any spots what so ever. Take it out of the tank and away from the others. You will then need to find out what it is ill with and treat BOTH tanks. Keep an eye on him because he can get an infection from the others chewing on his tail. Hope this helps. Good luck

If fin rot is ruled out, sometimes fins fray as a symptom of an overcrowed tank. You did not say how large the tank was, but if it is under 50 gallons (ideally 70 gallons) then over crowding could be an issue. Generally goldfish that I have kept are not fin nippers, but they have torn thier fins on plastic plants, especially delicate veil tail or fan tail fancy goldfish.
