The landlord received the keys BACK on the 7th. How am I responsible for the whole MONTH when he rented the place on the 15th? I can see paying for 7 days retro....

If he rented the place on the 15th you need to present that evidence to the court. You should only be responsible for the 14 days the property was unrented.

The key to your dilemma is did you give the landlord a full 30 days notice. This will allow the landlord sufficient time to find a person to replace you.

If you gave a full 30 day notice in writing then you should be OK, if not you might be liable for an additional amount of rent to the landlord.
