I have a 55 gallon tank, that is regularly maintained, but I need to clean the white crust that has built up on the top of the hood, how do i do this and what is causing this? Also, algae is begining to grow underneath the top on the glass that protects the light bulb. What is causing this and how do I clean it? Can I do anything in the future to prevent this, it is such an eye soar, because my aquarium is clean and the water is perfect!

Obviously don't use bleach. You can remove the hood and if you can seperate the light from the hood you can then use most household cleaners to remove the algae and the build up from hard water spray (the white stuff) then just rinse the hood really, really well in the tub or shower. A llittle vinegar really helps remove the white build up along with an old toothbrush.

Is it fresh water or saltwater? If saltwater, it's just the salt form the water evaporating. Not sure what it is if it's freshwater. DO NOT USE BLEACH! I fyou need to use anything use vinegar. It's nature's bleach.
