We used to have a Blue Shield individual plan. There was a one year waiting period for maternity coverage, and then a $5000 deductible. Our monthly premiums were about $250.

Now we have Blue Cross. There's no maternity coverage on the plan we currently have (which is fine because we're done having kids). Monthly premiums for us and 2 kids are $320

Your best bet will be to meet with an insurance agent who represents lots of companies and then spend lots of time examining the pros and cons of each plan. Honestly, your best bet will be to get a job at a company that is large enough to offer a really good insurance plan as a benefit (my friend's hubby got a job at Boeing halfway through her high risk pregnancy and they covered 100% of her costs from the first day he started working, no preexisting clause and no waiting period). Otherwise you'll be stuck choosing between low deductibles but high premiums, or high deductibles with low premiums.

Another option, and the one we ultimately used for both of my pregnancies, is a university. If you don't already have a bachelor's degree you can enroll as an undergraduate and get the school's insurance. For my last pregnancy I had a $550 per semester premium, $250 deductible, and then they paid 80% (even with that incredibly good insurance plan we still paid $4000 out of pocket for my pregnancy and c-section).

I have some bad news for you. If you have no health insurance now, most carriers won't cover a pregnancy AT ALL in the first 2 years of coverage.

I called about 10, and there was no chance of maternity coverage for the first 2 years.

You would need to get a job, preferably with your local government. They have the best policies, that you will never see anywhere else.

I worked for my county government. They paid 80% of my premiums, so for a family of 3, I only paid about $85 per paycheck for my premiums.

Then, for maternity, I only paid 2 obgyn copays and the rest were free. The hospital stay copay was $200 per day with a maximum out-of-pocket hospital was $1000 per incidence.
That meant: In 14 obgyn visits, 3 ultrasounds, and 2 weeks in the hospital, I paid only $1060 out of pocket. My hospital bill alone was $40,000. It helps to have good insurance.

I now have health insurance through my husband's employer, which will involve a $6000 copay for the hospital stay, and only pays 85% of costs.

I had my govt insurance through blue cross blue shield of Kansas City, and miss it dearly.

if you are seeking individual insurance, pay close attention to the waiting period for maternity coverage. In many cases the waiting period can last 6 month or more before they will cover pregnancy, as long as 12 months. in other cases they only cover "complications" to pregnancy. Most large insurance carriers as large enough to include hospitals or doctors you have a preference for, just check the book of providers.

another aspect to check is the coverage for "well visits" which are frequent for newborns.....
