Diversity is the product of evolution. It also drives evolution. Diversity is important in ecosystems so that they can remain balanced. You need the proper balance of animals and plants so that one aspect of the ecosystem does not get out of balance. Too many predators and the prey dies out then so do the predators. Not enough predators then the prey becomes over abundant and plant life suffers, etc. etc. This is just a general example. But the more different types of plants and animals you have in any given ecosystem the more balanced and successful it will be.

Diversity is important in ecosystems because it makes sure that everything is healthy. In water ecosystems an equation called the Shannon Index of Species Diversity measures the diversity of the water inhabitants. The higher the diversity of the water system the better. It is a way to tell if an ecosystem is healthy because of the number of different organisms that live there. Diversity within a species is important because it makes sure that species cannot die. The more diverse a species is the more chances it has for survival because it has more options for adaptation.
