When I first ordered my DELL laptop on the phone, I was told I wouldnt have to pay any interest on my laptop for 18 months. 2 months later after receiving my bill I noticed I had a 30% finance charge added to my payment. When I called Dell they basically said I misunderstood and that they never offered me no interest. When you call Dell, you will hear a message saying this call is being recorded, well i had asked if I can hear back the conversation. I know for a fact they told me NO INTEREST!! They kept transferring me to at least 5 different ext.'s, I ended up with no answers!!! If it wasnt for the "no interest" i wouldnt have gotten my laptop through Dell. I would have kept looking for a better deal. Lately on the news I have been noticing a lot of complains about the same problem. Does anyone out there know what I can do about this???

Please advise me,

desperately seeking answers

I experienced their "customer service" a few months ago. And I just wanted to know what was wrong with my battery. I also got passed around to different extenstions with no live help. They do this so you can give up and hang up. I was persistent with this call and called the Sales department, since they always take the calls. So I complained to whoever I ended up taking my call.

They wanted me to pay for the one time tech assistance. But it was only a simple question that I had to pay $49 for that call. I refused to pay for the tech help and ended up buying another battery. I fiugred eventually I would have to buy another battery. I felt trapped. Either way they got my money. I like you feel that if I would have known Dell had customer service like this, I would have never bought from them.

As far as your problem is concerned, report it to http://www.consumeraffairs.com. There have been 700 more complaints about the Dell vs. New York lawsuit.

We bought a DELL and we have that *wonderful* 30% interest rate, which is ridiculous because we are basically paying for the interest, not the computer. I don't know if this works or not but my husbands father told us that you can call them and say "I want this payment to go to the computer not the interest..." then you should be able to pay for your computer. I know their customer service sucks, and I don't know if calling them would even help. I bet you were on the phone for like 5 hrs. If this is something that you are really willing to fight for then find out where their head office is and write them letters, and demand to speak to the person in charge. Either they will give in because you are right, or they will get tired of hearing from you and give in. Good luck and I hope that you can find a solution!

What likely happened is there is an OFFER of "no interest" if you sign up with Dell Small Business Lease or something of that sort, but since you declined, there would be no record of it in the system. Either that or your purchase didn't reach the requirements (I'm going to guess 2000 or so).

The problem here is unless you have WRITTEN PROOF of this offer, instead of "something I heard over the phone" it'd be very hard to convince someone to intercede on your behalf. A statement or invoice that says "no interest" or SOMETHING on paper is a lot more convincing than "I know what I heard".

I am not sure if you can do anything unless you have a wriiten contract explicitely outlining the financial terms of the deal that indicate no interest. However, I see the the NY State Attorney is accusing Dell of fraud so you may want to keep an eye out in case you can see if a class action suit is launched or not.

"Dell is being accused of making false promises to customers to drive sales, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

The court filing accuses Dell and Dell Financial Services of fraud, false advertising and deceptive business practices, including offering misleading financing, and failing to honor rebates, warranties and service contracts."
