I saw a PBS thing on this phenomena this morning. Ofcourse, all they said was that it happens every so many hundred thousand years and that the Earths magnetic field is weakening, which appearenty is a sign that the magnetic poles are getting ready to reverse. Does this really happen? What will this mean for us exactly? Will my compass point south or what? Any Earth Science Majors in the house?

The north and south magentic poles have drifted significantly from their position 20 years ago. How much longer before they change completely is largely unknown and it would be pure speculation to state when it is going to happen, with any certanty.

The impact of magentic polar reversal on our technology is also largely unknown, since it has not happened in modern times.

Yes, the polarity of the Earth has changed in the past. Iron bearing rocks reveal these shifts. If it does switch, your compass will point south. As for major effects on what will happen to life, a lot of scientists are still out. Personally, I do not see it as a major problem, but there could be aspects of the Earth's current polarity that we are overlooking.
