She is so obscure. I had trouble understanding most of her poems. By the way this is not a homework assignment. I've been out of school for many years. I just would like to understand what I read. Is it just me or do others have trouble with her.

From what I've read Emily was a recluse and very eccentric with nothing major ever happening in her life. She had the hills and her dog and her thoughts actually and that is all. She used themes to make a statement in her poems ..i.e.SUCCESS IS COUNTED SWEETEST she uses a battle to make her statement on life's rewards. She says "Not one of all the purple Host, Who took the Flag that day, Can tell the definition, So clear of victory." and go back to the first 2 lines SUCCESS IS COUNTED SWEETEST, BY THOSE WHO NE'ER SUCCEED. The soldier(Host) lost the battle but in losing he appreciated life and 'comprehended a nectar because of his "sorest need' ...he was dying and the appreciation of life was greater. She is strange but if you get into her way of writing somehow it is lovely and makes sense.

I usually don't have a problem with her, but you can always try looking on sparknotes.com. I think some of her poems are up there, and maybe the explanations will help you with future readings
