What bad impact will Antarctica have if tourism increases??

Tourism is definitely increasing to Antarctica. Take a look at the first 3 links below to see all the vacation packages available. Most of the packages involve cruise ships that take people to coastlines to see penguins. Remember the recent penguin movies that came out like "Happy Feet" and "March of the Penguins"? This is one of the things that is driving tourism to Antarctica, along with stories and pictures of the amazing beauty of that place.

The biggest problem people worry about is that this tourism will cause stress to the delicate ecosystem in Antarctica. (I include a link to an article about this below.) All those people could frighten and stress out the penguins. It could scare away the fish they eat. It could cause erosion to the coastlines. Of course this problem is happening everywhere because there are so many people in the world and they are crowding into the few ecological spots that are left. Antarctica is still relatively unspoiled, so the problem is easier to recognise there.

Another problem is diplomatic. No country owns Antarctica, so what do you do about things like crime and accidents? What happens when there is a fuel spill, or pollution? Who would have the authority to punish those responsible? Are there agreements to come to the aid of damaged vessels or injured tourists.

There is a group called the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators who regulates tourism there. It follows the rules of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 which was signed by many countries. They can work with international courts and individual nations to ensure that the laws are obeyed and Antarctica is protected.

Some people still feel this is not enough; the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) for example try to get countries to agree on regulations for fishing and mining that might damage the ecosystem in the area. This is more to do with commerce than tourism, but still is important.

There are some questions to think about with Antarctic Tourism, such as who will pay for things like cleaning up the shores and guarding the wildlife from poaching? Perhaps there ought to be a tax on tourism, but who would collect and manage that money? As yet, there is no clear answer to that, but perhaps that will come before the United Nations for consideration some day.

However you must make up your own mind, my opinion may not be what your school project is looking for, you can work it out, either to follow your leader or to speak your mind . But if you speak your mind make sure you have a few facts to back up your story.
I think , and this is just my opinion , (I can back it up if required) is that should there ever be a rush to visit Antarctica (which is very doubtful) It would make no difference to this 'global warming (theory) !!
I feel your question should have been "What difference would tourism make upon Antarctica"??
As far as I am concerned very little, there are very few folk there in the first place, it would be arranged that a few Eskimos would be sitting in place around a hole cut into the ice fishing, they would be paid (very little) for doing that job! But they would do it and smile a lot and have their photo's taken with arms around these ' tourists' to show how much we love each other?
Now I would suggest that what your 'leader' is after is more in the line of Airplane fumes , tree growing and tree hugging on on ice bergs , etc etc?

There are cruises on research ships that tourists can pay to go on, round the South Atlantic. They are extemely careful, when disembarking onto any Islands, with boots being disinfected and not leaving any trace of the visit, etc. It is strictly regulated so there shouldn't be any detrimental effect even if there is an increase. More money, from carefully supervised tourists, means more research to help save the environment. There are also lectures given onboard, which raise awareness of the problems in that area.

That's a random subject to be writing on. I suppose the main problems would be the increase of global warming due to the amount of fuel aeroplanes release into the atmousphere.

Plus it's only a matter of time before lunn poly try to scam poor easily-led fools into thinking Antarctica would be a fantastic holiday destination.

Are we talking tourism in Antarctica? I don't think that will be issue. Its mostly a place for scientists. No one wants to vacation in the South Pole.
