Because if someone acts in their own self-interest, that self-interest may include harming or killing you.

Simple - Those looking out for thier own best interests, at some point, gain the understanding that others are needed. Those others that are needed then become involved, looking out for thier own best interests, and the cycle repeats.

Looking out for self interest does NOT mean at the detriment of others - it provides motivation.

i dont know what the hell macroeconomics is, but i will say being that self absorbed in life is a pretty awful thought.
do this....think of a person in your life who is the least selfish...you know the one, who you can count on anytime, who sometimes even gets taken advatage of because they are always giving? now...imagine how you would feel if they were not that way.
its a sad thought isnt it
