So obviously the question is in the title. Would a compass be attracted to an electro-magnet?

The reason a compass does point north is because the earth has a large magnetic field caused by electricity running through the core of the earth. What I am wondering is, could a compass be attracted to a large magnet? It makes sense that it could be, but I am not really sure. Thanks

A compass will be affected by the magnetic field which is the resultant of earth's magnetic field and any other magnetic field established by a bar magnet or electromagnet or current carrying wire,coil, solenoid or moving charge.

The compass will be aligned parallel to the resultant magnetic field.


(The magnetic dipole moment of compass will be in the direction of resultant magnetic field)

The north pole of compass , when brought close to south pole of any magnet, will be attracted towards the south pole

The north pole of compass , when brought close to north pole of any magnet, will be repelled away from the north pole

the electromagnet creates a new magnetic field that overpowers the earths magnetic field
force of magnetism has to do with the distance away, and since your electromagnet is much closer than the earths pole, it attracts the north side of the compass

Yes it will. In fact, a combination of compass and electromagnet designed to move the compass needle is called an electric motor.

only a few metals have strong magnetic properties and are suitable for use in electromagnets, and iron and it's alloys like steel are top of the list. Other metals with weaker magnetic properties are cobalt and nickel. Aluminum has no magnetic properties, so it will not work in an electromagnet. .

It will align appropriately with the magnetic field lines created by the electromagnet. This was in fact one of the classical experiments in the early days of electromagnetism performed by Faraday.

what does the magnet in the second -last sentence means?
is it electromagnet?
are the supports of your compass frictionless?
is the electro-magnet you are talking made up of superconducting materials?
