a)1.332 x 10 ^ 4

b) 4.9 x 10 ^ - 9

Significant digits are used for accuracy and comprehension and thus important mostly in experiments that contain measurements.

Non-zero digits are always significant.
For zeroes, it will be significant if:
1. its between two nonzero digits
2. its after a nonzero digit and placed behind the decimal point

Significant digits are basically the numbers that are "important," in terms of precision. There are a few rules to remember to figure out how many sig figs are in a measurement. Try looking here for more info:

When you write a number in scientific notation, you will always put down a number that falls between 1 and 10, followed by 10 to the "something," which is the power of ten used to move the decimal to the right (positive exponent) or to the left (negative exponent.)

Your answers to your questions should be as follows.
1.332 x 10^4

4.9 x 10^-9

Significant figures are number of digit which includes 0 when placed after but not included when placed before hand
Ex: 00.033 have a significant number of 2 i.e. 1st 3 is 1 and 2nd 3 is the other.
Thus,significant figures are found.

i think of the 0's in 'e' are significant. it is because of the fact they're 0's performing between non-0 digits (consequently they're significant). If it have been 00.002 then it would have basically a million sig digit. yet with non-0's in front, they're all significant.
