Answer.
NEVER,NEVER,turn a mains powered smoke alarm of unless it is faulty.I am a firefighter and have been to so many bad fires were the occupants have taken batteries out or disconnected smoke alarms. If you are cooking close the doors and if one goes of then just blow into it andit will soon stop.

you don't turn them off not now not ever ..they are there to save you in an emergency ..even thinking about it is totally stupid ..and for sure if you did have a fire and the alarms were off then you would have no insurance ..you could be paying for the rest of your life

The only thing you can do is unplug it.

Turn it counter-clockwise and unplug the wire behind it. Dont electrocute yourself.

If the smoke alarm is hooked to a security or fire system... DONT UNPLUG IT! Depending on the type of system, it could trigger an alarm.

The battery is probably low. Remove the old battery, then push the 'test' button. THe alarm will try and sound, but it will grow fainter and fainter. Keep this up until there's no more sound.

Put in a fresh battery, and that should take care of it, unless I'm not understanding your problem.

Its there - to protect you !!! Never disconnect one -

If it's faulty - call the Company / Home owner for repairs.
Might have to be replaced by Licensed Electrician.

Check with Fire Dept. / Local City code - or you might
invalidate your home owners Insurance policy ...

If it's mains powered then disconnect it from the consumer unit. Be careful though. Try not to get electrocuted to death.
