sensation with a breast reduction?

You do NOT always lose sensation with a reduction.

I got my sensation back within three months post op.

Some people take over a year to get sensation back.

To me, loss of sensation would be nothing because my back pain is GONE!

I am 23 and had a reduction done at the beginning of January '09. The surgery was needed for the exact same reasons you are considering. I was a 36DDD and went down to a 36C. In any reduction the nipple has to be moved (that is normal for the procedure). Before the surgery, I had no sensation. My dr explained that this is normal. I just thought it was normal for me. The heavy weight of large breasts can actually stretch out the nerves to where you have no sensation. After the reduction, I regained full sensation..wow was I missing a lot. A lot of the after-effects depend on your surgeon and his/her skill. I did my homework and researched specifics about 5 different doctors before I amde a decision on the surgeon. Good luck on your surgery. I recommend it to anyone considering.

Not always, but yes, mostly, you do. Most breast reductions involve cutting around the nipple... this is more likely to preserve the sensation than a full nipple graft, but cutting in that area is still going to alter how they feel. She should talk to her doctor about what steps they will be taking to preserve sensation (and nursing ability, should she someday wish to breastfeed) and weigh the pros and cons.

If the nerves are cut, there is always a chance, but if she really NEEDS a reduction, even if she lost the sensation, it's normally a small compromise in comparision to the pain caused by very large breasts.
