ive been hearing about buying books online but do they have to be from the same school youre going to or does one book have everything that most universities have?

You need to have the ISBNs of the books you need. Textbook titles can be similar and there may be multiple editions of the book by the same title and author, but the ISBN is unique. It doesn't matter where you buy it so long as it is the right book.

go by ISBN number.

Most textbooks are universal. Sometimes a university will have an abridged version (which sucks because the index tends to be complete so you'll try to find page 152 and see that the book jumps from 145 to 167).

Go to your bookstore, write down all the ISBN numbers and go online.

You need to compare the details of the books on your reading list to the online descriptions. Edition, date of publication, etc.

I like amazon.com because the prices are good, you get free shipping after you spend $25 and they have affiliates you can buy used books from.

As long as they have the same title it doesn't matter (and content)
