I might be wrong, but I don't believe Convicted Felons are eligible to hold most national level offices. What level of politics are we discussing, State, County, City Council? In that case it depends on the constitution or charter governing that body.

To answer your question, No they should not be allowed to run for a public office ever again but... the politicians will not close that door because they might be caught, indicted, tried, found guilty, serve time and need a job when they get out out of prison and they need to keep their options open.

It depends on the crime. If it's a felony, they can't vote or run for office.

If it's any category less than that, and they've served their crime and want to run, they have every right to under our form of government.
Personally, I would hope the people would reject his candidacy...but if they elect him, they elect him.

My state elected Jesse Ventura, and it doesn't get any worse than that -- except for Bush, who has more power -- and would've been a felon and someone CAUGHT him with the blow he was using, for, like, 20 years.

Can he be reelected? Yes. Should he be? Probably not. It all depends on the stupidity of the voters. That explains the state of affairs in the government schools. Keep them dumb so that they are easier to manipulate.
