Judges and lawyers are equally important, as far as criminal justice is concerned. Justice cannot be served without judges or lawyers. There is an interdependence. In the legal community, however, judges are given more respect and judges pull a little more political weight.

The paralegal profession is an honorable and practical one. However, at the end of the day, they are little more than legal secretaries in terms of importance in criminal justice.

It depends on what you mean by important. A good paralegal is important to the lawyer, as is a good administrative secretary - they do the ground work, but the trial lawyer must be good to present a winnable case. It is important to have a good trial lawyer with the respect of the court (judge). Criminal cases require criminal or litigation lawyers. A lawyer in private practice may have the qualities necessary to take your case or may refer you to another lawyer. A lawyer that says he takes all kinds of cases probably means that he/she is not qualified for the big leagues.

Now if your mean standing in the community a judge is usually the most important guy in the room. A Traffic Court judge is much less important than a top tier lawyer.

The legal profession is symbiotic when it comes to "which is more important" which requires at least two of those three...Lawyers and Judges (I do not include paralegals since those responsibilities can be performed by lawyers who simply can't afford an assistant).

I assume that they are equally important and parts of a whole that we call the "justice system."
