Elvis did the same thing for his generation that Led Zeppelin did less than ten years later. He gave the world a new twist of music that the world was crying for. Look at the world at the time when he raised to who he became. Post second world war, with two super powers at each others throats, nuclear arms in every corner aimed at another corner, political turmoil and steady fighting around the world. America needed a new kind of music. The "I want to hold your hand" kind of stuff was getting old fast and everyone needed the kind of music that their parents would hate. Not only could Elvis do that in the recording studio, his actions on stage turned allot of heads. That and his music could apply to everyone one. He was a very religious young man, sweet and romantic. And swaying hips the next. He opened the door for allot of bands like Led Zeppelin to come around and change rock and roll forever. Elvis was even a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan. When the band was just starting up and playing in Tennessee, he invited Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to Graceland and had dinner with them. When they were about to leave, HE asked them for their autographs.

Elvis did have a great voice and sang with soul and intensity. Listen to his music pre and post Colonel Parker and you will hear a difference than that crap he did during his movie carreer. Listen to his 1968 comeback special album (on Itunes) for an example. His version of "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" rocks beyond measure.

He is the king of rock and roll! He started out being a gospel singer, and it progressed from there. His songs are liked by everyone...or almost everyone. He pretty much has love songs that could describe anything anyone is going through. I grew up on elvis. The king will never die!!!

Because he was "controversial" by the standards of those days, kids were looking to rebel and with James Dean on the movie screens somebody close to their age needed to surface, there came Elvis, shaking his butt and moving his hips in a way that made older people blush. Hence kids were drawn to him and besides, his music was great...

I think Elvis became a star because no one did what he did at the time he did it. Also, the youngsters needed something to bug their parents and he did it!
