About all a homeowner can do themself to an air conditioner is to clean the coils. You can buy a can of coil cleaner at the hardware for a couple of bucks. Take the unit outside, take the case off of it, and just follow directions. This will help a lot of the unit is really dirty. But if there is something wrong with the sealed syster (freon), you'll have to replace it. Sorry.

About the only thing you can do legally is clean the condensor coils. They get blocked up with dust and dirt. When it comes to the compressor, that requires a licenced technician. The hardware store will tell you that since they cannot sell you anything that would help with it.

Take a class in refrigeration at your local Community College then you can answer your own question -- no way that some hardware store is going to do you any good. look in the ads, craigslist etc. for a working used unit. you may even find one free for the hauling.

you need to have it PROFESSIONALLY recharged. it has probably been a while since you had any maintenance done to it. this should take care of the problem or the service tech could give you a better idea whats wrong. also it could be that the condenser part of the unit (outside) could just need a cleaning make sure that there is enough air flowing out of the unit to dissipate the heat from the unit

Nothing in a hardware will fix it, unless it's a blown fuse or breaker in your electrical panel. Since you'r clueless, dont touch it.

You must have the right tools to do this work and if you let the refrigerant out into the air it is a $10,000.00 fine
