Sexual reproduction allows the genes from two organisms to be scrambled and rearranged in a new organism. This helps maintain a mix of alleles (versions of genes) in the population which maintains diversity. Also, the new organism may have traits that give it greater reproductive success, and this can lead to evolution causing the trait to spread through the population.

Mutation may introduce new traits into the population which can spread if they increase reproductive success.
