They are indeed regularly checked by Trading Standards and sealed to prevent tampering. What the accepted level of accuracy is, I don't know. Why not ring your local Trading Standards.

You've probably seen the bloke with the van and a variety of calibrated containers on a forecourt - that's what he's doing.

Years ago when I worked as a mechanic it was at a petrol station. I think about every 3 months the pumps were checked by a government run authority. I'm sure this happens all over the western world & just like electric meters etc... they are sealed with a wire strap to prevent tampering

I the uk all petrol pumps are tested before being used by the public and sealed to prevent them being tampered with. Petrol pumps are also routinely checked for accuracy by Trading Standards Officers whom are employed by your local authority.

However finding exactly what the accuracy levels are is proving a little trickier however it falls within the WEIGHTS AND MEASURES ACT 1985

They are very accurate and are checked and sealed by Trading Standards. The good news is that as they wear they tend to give a bit extra.

Good question, I've often wondered this myself! I'm sure they don't all dispense the same amount even when it's supposed to be the same price and how would we know?

i lifted the nozzel the other day, and it went straight to 25p then to my amazement without touching any thing ,it started to go up, they are not accurate.

in virginia the weights and measure dept spot check ...not many violations...BIG fines.

apparently if you fill up when it's cold you get more fuel than you do on a hot summer's day?????? or so i was told.........
