It could be available physical or virtual memory availability. Check under system properties advanced tab to see that your upper virtual memory limit is set at at least 1.5-2 times that of your physical RAM. In other words if you have 512 MB RAM set the upper virtual memory limit to 768 or 1024, even more if you're doing video compression or are playing games with high video demand.

go to start, control panel, performance and maintenance and then system and you should be on the tab general, at the bottom it should show your processor speed and ram which stands for random access memory and if you have 256MB or less of memory then you should get a memory upgrade which is easy on this site http://www.crucial.com/ easy to install by yourself. if that isn't the problem then you should download a good anti-virus and scan your computer for virus's and spyware that could causes freezing, http://www.ewido.net/en/download/...
and if its freezing at start up it would also help to set applications to not start up at the start up screen as this takes time for everything to open at one time.

Too many things loading in the background.

First, scan the PC for spyware.

Then go to start > run > and type in: msconfig
In the window that appears go to the "startup" tab
You will see the programs that are not parts of Windows itself that are loading in the program. Uncheck any you do not need to load on start up. (For most people, that is ALL of them). You can always go back and recheck something if you find you needed it.
