Edmund Muskie seemed to be the choice until he fell into disfavor because he started crying in front of the press after his wife had been insulted. The Democrats ended up choosing George McGovern, who lost to Nixon in a landslide, carrying only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia while losing in his home state of South Dakota. McGovern is still alive.

They chose George McGovern, a left wing liberal, whose views were soundly rejected by the electorate when Nixon won the election in a landslide. Only liberal Massachusetts, controlled by the Kennedy clan, voted to elect McGovern.
